Force Alone Maintained Him, Force Alone Overthrows Him

Where are my Rousseau fans at?

From Rousseau’s Discourse on Inequality (1755):

the despot is master only as long as he is the stronger, and that as soon as he can be expelled, he cannot complain about the violence. The uprising that ends with the sultan being strangled or dethroned is as lawful an act as those by which, the day before, he disposed of his subjects’ lives and goods. Force alone maintained him, force alone overthrows him.
